Funfill not Landfill!
USS (Ulverston Scrap Store) is a small charity set up in 2010 to provide clean, safe scrap materials that can be used by schools, community groups, workshop leaders and many others for creative projects in the Furness and South Lakes area.
This isn’t a new idea; there are over 100 other scrap stores across the UK that have already been set up and are running successfully. Some are run by local councils are some are charities/not for profits. The two most local are “Free for All” in Wigton, nr Carlisle and “Grumpys” based in Manchester and Salford.
ScrapstoresUK has been set up as an umbrella organisation for all scraps stores in the UK.
How does it work?
Businesses (generally it is businesses rather than individuals who donate waste materials) provide the waste materials that they would normally have to pay to dispose of and which then would go to landfill. Instead, they donate it to USS.
Members join USS for a small annual fee and then come and take what they need for a donation each time. This covers the running costs.
Who is it for?
These are some of the types of groups that could use USS, I’m sure there are many more
